Innovative furniture manufacturer BDI designed the Up-LINQ Bed, a stylish and modern bed system featuring dimmable LED accent lighting in the headboard. The original design was created using COB LED strip light from Armacost Lighting. But in the early stages of production, BDI identified the need for a custom lighting solution that would give their customers an elegant lighting control method that was compatible with their manufacturing operations. BDI presented the challenge to the Custom Shop product experts at Armacost Lighting, and together we designed an LED lighting package specifically to meet their needs at the cross section of manufacturability and optimal user experience.
BDI’s goal was to create a touch sensor in the headboard to control the LED accent light power and dimming settings. The user would touch an easily accessible brass rail sensor embedded in the bed frame to control the lighting. But BDI couldn’t find a sensor with the appropriate level of sensitivity that was compatible with their manufacturing operations. Our Custom Shop product team worked with BDI to design a custom strip light, remote touch LED dimmer, and wall-mount power supply product combination that met their functionality and aesthetic specifications. The integration of the custom product solution eliminated BDI’s manufacturing restraints and resulted in a thoughtfully designed, easily accessible touch sensor at the top of the Up-LINQ Bed headboard.
